Sudbury’s SUN Solar Co-op has just formed a new partnership with Soventix Canada, a division of a German solar project developer. Soventix is already working on solar projects with many other co-ops in Ontario, including Temiskaming, Kingston and Toronto. Over the next month, the partnership will apply for as many as 10 FIT4 contracts with the provincial electrical authority (IESO), each to produce 500 KW of solar power for 20 years. Soventix will provide virtually all the resources to design, procure, and build the projects, turning them over to SUN when they are complete over the next two years. Profits will be used to support other local community environmental projects.
Success will depend on the first, difficult step that must be completed quickly: finding, within Greater Sudbury, suitable properties that are available for lease. Please spread the word to those you know with properties in the rural areas of the city since we need to sign leases as soon as possible. We are looking for properties with at least 5 acres available (about 5 football fields) that are relatively flat, close to 3-phase power lines, not on good agricultural land, and not heavily treed. Twenty years of lease payments are a great incentive, but also supporting renewable energy and a local co-op of course!
Do not hesitate to contact us for more information or if you or someone you know is interested! Let’s build a green, healthy community together!
